Shelley McCarthy Says Open Communication Drives Financial Success

Open communication is emerging as a key factor in financial decision‑making for couples, according to managing director Shelley McCarthy of Informed Choice.

Why partnership matters more than any single investment

McCarthy argues that the most consequential financial choice a client can make is not a specific product, but the decision to share money matters with a trusted partner. She emphasizes that trust and dialogue are as important as any pension plan or emergency fund.

In many households, one partner naturally leads budgeting and bill payment. That arrangement can function well if the other spouse stays informed and participates in major choices. The problem arises when one person is largely unaware of the family’s financial position. Planners can encourage joint involvement but cannot force it.

A 2024 study by TSB found that about 61 % of couples use a joint bank account, while the remaining 39 % keep separate accounts or blend individual and joint accounts. The research does not declare a single best method; instead, it highlights that both models rely on transparency and shared participation.

Money as a stress factor in relationships

Financial strain consistently appears among the top reasons for divorce. Hidden debts, rising living costs, and divergent attitudes toward saving can create tension that spills over into personal life. McCarthy points out that regular conversations about household finances help prevent misunderstandings. “Significant financial decisions should rarely come as a surprise and are generally better made together,” she says.

The question of whether a “my money, your money” approach leads to more conflict than a shared‑responsibility model has no easy answer. However, she believes that openness and collaboration are unlikely to cause harm. In cases where one partner enters a marriage with substantially more wealth, a pre‑nuptial agreement may provide clarity and protect both parties if circumstances shift.

When couples treat finances as a shared responsibility, they reduce the risk of hidden debts emerging later. This practice mirrors how couples often handle other joint decisions, such as purchasing a home or planning a family vacation. The parallel suggests that financial transparency fits naturally into broader relationship trends.

Building a foundation for long‑term security

Consistent dialogue builds trust.

By keeping each other informed, partners create a resilient financial plan that can adapt to life’s changes.
